South of Scotland Orienteering League

Events in the SoSOL are designed for competitors of all ages and abilities and there will normally be eight courses: white, yellow, orange, light green, short green, green, blue and brown, ranging from short and easy to fairly long and easy, from short and hard to long and hard. There may also be a long, easy course; contact the club for details.

They are generally held on Sunday mornings with starts from 11:00 to 12:30 and there is generally no need to pre-enter although, where offered, pre-entry can help both you and the club and will guarantee you the course of your choice.

These events attract between 120-250 runners who can expect good quality terrain, friendly and efficient organisation, pre-marked maps and electronic punching.

League tables are drawn up for each course over the season with times converted to points and a runner's best four scores will count. Only runners who have scored in two or more events (in the same courses) will appear in these tables.

More details about the Scoring

Scores are based on the "Average" runner getting 100 points and other runners' times being scaled to points.

League positions will be determined by the total of the best scores and each year the ESOA committee determine how many scores count. (4 from 7 in 2014-2015)

On the WHITE course all runners who complete their course get "***" instead of points and the tables do not distinguish between juniors who did their course unaided, those who were shadowed and those who were accompanied.

Eight colour coded courses are offered at each event and runners are free to choose whichever they wish.

There may be other courses, eg Long Orange, but these will not be included in the League tables.

Runner numbers

The number of runners at a SoSOL depends on many factors. These tables may help clubs predict the numbers they will get.
